Carp farming Žabnik, Sv. Florijan, Slovenija
Our ponds are restored medieval ponds which were owned by the nobility. Our family started restoring the ponds in 1980 with the last one being renovated in 2009. Due to the lack of natural resources (there are only 2.5 ha of water surface at our disposal and a small water source which dries up in summer), we have developed a technology of intensive carp breeding with yield achievement from 5 to 10 t/ha per year. Besides carp, we also breed pike and pike-perch, according to the market demand we used to breed or have been breeding more than 12 indigenous species of fish intended for fish repopulation. For each species we have our own breeding shoal, we self-sufficiently perform controlled spawning, fry breeding, and breeding for consumption. Each fish grown at a carp farm is intended for fish repopulation of fishing grounds, its quality exceeding all regulatory norms and expectations (health status, condition, appearance, etc.).
The results achieved at our own carp farm prompted the implementation of our experience into large systems of Croatian fish farmers. For this reason our company G2O is currently leading carp production in the range of 2500 to 3000 t of carp per year (in comparison - the entire annual fish production in Slovenia is about 1000 t). Numerous smaller fish farms in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary are breeding carp in accordance with our technology which is widely accessible through lectures at international congresses.
Recirculation for Brown Trout Breeding Dvor, Šmarje pri Jelšah, Slovenia
Seven years ago we started breeding brown trout, rainbow trout and Danube salmon at the newly built fish farm in Šmarje pri Jelšah. At this location there are similar limited natural resources with 7 l/s of fresh water at our disposal. For this reason, after years of acquiring experience in classical flow-trough system we have independently designed and constructed a recirculation system with production capacity from 100 t per year. Recirculation is equipped with oxygen and ozone generators, an automatic monitoring, and regulation of the water parameters, which requires 4-hour working time maintenance. In terms of its capacity, energy consumption, and quality of the final product, recirculation is among the top of the world aquaculture. Trout are sold for consumption and fish repopulation in Slovenia and abroad.
Construction of recirculation has contributed to the development of aquaculture in Slovenia and abroad, seeing that our experience has started preventing prejudice against recirculation and encouraged many fish farmers to start with modernization of their own farms or constructing recirculation.
